A Grape Investment Opportunity
Investors wanting an affordable way into the buoyant New Zealand wine industry are eyeing up viticulture opportunities
near Oamaru.
Waitaki Valley Estates are offering more than 40 lots on the north-facing slopes of the Waitaki River, in a prime
viticulture area promising a superb vintage this year.
Belle Property marketing agents Wendy and Nigel Mayson say the sites are affordable and exciting.
“This investment has it all,” says Wendy. “Affordability, superior returns, lifestyle, stunning scenery, the romanticism
of wine and the possibility of your own wine label.”
Nigel says the in-going cost per hectare for Waitaki viticulture land is about a third the price of Marlborough
viticulture land and the forecast returns are better than dairy farming.
“This is prime viticulture land, already producing great wine and with a return on investment estimated by the manager
to be about 20 percent per annum over a ten-year investment period,” he says.
“Prices range from $196,000 plus GST to $1.2M and the lots range in size and aspect, so buyers can choose what best
suits their dream – whether it’s for a residence, a holiday home, vines they tend or vines they have managed. The grapes
can be added to the estate crops for their vintage, or you can have your own label from your own grapes.”
Waitaki Valley Estates vineyard general manager Steve Harrop says the investment properties are realising the vision a
respected entrepreneur had for the area.
“The late Howard Patterson first noticed the limestone escarpments and saw the potential back in 2000,” he says. “Since
then, 65 hectares of Pinot Noir and aromatic white grapes have been planted here by wine industry leaders. We have
specific micro-climates, as well as limestone rich soils usually associated with the premium red wines of Burgundy in
France.
“Otago Pinot Noir is now second only to Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc as a globally recognised New Zealand wine brand, so
it’s no wonder canny investors have their eye on the Waitaki Valley,” he says.
Would-be investors can register for a free information evening about the Waitaki Valley Estates investment opportunity
at Fisher Galleries’ Backspace on Wednesday May 14 at 5pm.
