NZ Derby Success Keeps Flowing
On the same day that Kiwi-bred and trained Nom de Jeu won the Group 1 AJC Australian Derby, Karaka Select Sale graduate
Farson (Postponed x Lady Gesine by Grosvenor) continued the stellar roll of New Zealand horses in the Southern
Hemisphere's classic races, winning the Listed Macau Derby (1800m).
The Peter Leyshan-trained gelding picked up where last year's winner - NZB South Island Sale graduate Ka Lam Fortune -
left off, finishing two-and-three-quarter lengths ahead of his Listed Macau Guineas winning rival, Club House. He is now
the winner of four of his fourteen starts after a glimpse of his potential two starts ago, taking out the Listed Macau
Derby Trial (1500m).
Bred by Mike Tololi's Karaka Group, Farson was purchased by Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock for NZ$85,000 from Hallmark Stud
in 2005. Postponed stands at Tololi's Stoney Bridge Stallion Station in Karaka and can now lay claim to five
stakeswinners in Post Thyme, Dorabella, Pasta Post and Naturo.
Postponed will be represented by 14 progeny at New Zealand Bloodstock's National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale, including 10 weanlings, 1 racehorse and 3 broodmares.
Capturing the other feature of the day, the Listed Macau Sprint Trophy (1200m), was fellow 2005 Select Sale graduate Red
Glory (Pins x Ballina Magic by Lord Ballina). Kiwi trainer Richard Yuill purchased the four-year-old as a Select Sale
yearling from Waikato Stud for NZ$27,000. Now a winner of seven from 14, the win was the Stephen Chow-trained gelding's
second at Listed level, having won the Macau Chairman's Challenge Cup (1200m) earlier this year.
Seven weanlings by Pins will be offered at the NZB National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale.
Also notching up international black-type on the weekend was Karaka Premier Sale graduate Likefatherlikeson (Reset x
Classical Star by Star Way), who burst onto the scene at Rosehill to win the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m) by a
convincing one-and-a-half lengths.
The Graeme Rogerson-trained juvenile was bred by Paul and Cushla Smithies' Monovale Holdings and was sold at the 2007
Karaka Premier Sale for NZ$125,000 by Lyndhurst Farm. Third place-getter in the race, Emperor Bonaparte (Montjeu x
Endless Joy by Centaine), was also sold through Mark and Shelley Treweek's Lyndhurst draft, going to Dominion Bloodstock
Agency for NZ$300,000.
Likefatherlikeson joins Group 3 SAJC Sires' Produce winner Rebel Raider to be the second stakes-winner from the first
crop of his unbeaten sire, Reset (Zabeel).
Later in the card, Nom du Jeu (Montjeu x Prized Gem by Prized) and Red Ruler (Viking Ruler x Ransom Bay by Red Ransom)
continued New Zealand-bred horses' domination of the Derby scene with a Kiwi-bred and trained quinella in the Group 1
AJC Australian Derby (2400m).
Formidably, Nom du Jeu is a former stablemate of this season's Group 1 VRC Derby winner Kibbutz (Golan x Misskap by
Kaapstad). He too was trained by Baker in NZ before being sold to Victoria and relocating to David Hayes's stable.
Red Ruler, purchased by trainer John Sargent from Trelawney Stud's 2006 Karaka Premier Sale draft for NZ$60,000, ran on
well for second.
Entered in the upcoming National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale are three broodmares by Montjeu while at Lot 59 a sole weanling entry by Red Ransom will be
offered on account of Twin Pines.
