IPENZ- Proposals for DIY & Restricted Building Sensible
IPENZ welcomes the commitment by Government to clarify both restricted building work and DIY as soon as possible.
“It is good to see that the Government is pursuing its promise to lower compliance costs in construction which will assist housing affordability,” says Dr Andrew Cleland, IPENZ Chief Executive.
“We are pleased to see that a sensible balance between consumer protection and increased compliance costs is intended. In this respect the Government seems to have heeded the advice of a number of industry groups, including ourselves,”” says Dr Cleland.
“In respect of restricted building work, the intention to concentrate on the issue of safety and the potential for large economic loss and not worry about matters in which the cost of protecting consumers is too large relative to the further protection gained is welcomed,” he says.
“The solution proposed for DIY seems pragmatic – it is realistic for a DIY person to have to accept some risk, if their work is later proven to be substandard.”
“IPENZ is committed to working with the Government to get the right balance between bureaucracy and worthwhile consumer protection in the construction sector.”
