X Media Lab Project Outcomes
1) Re-enchantment
Re-enchantment - An interactive journey into the hidden world of fairytales, across cultures, screens and platforms. (Melbourne, Sydney)
Outcome: Has been commissioned by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation
2) The Prosperity in Suzhou
Goldie Cartoon International Culture Co. Ltd. is transforming the legendary “Prosperity in Suzhou” scroll into a 3D animation masterpiece.
Outcome: Is now in pre-production with Virgin Animation. Suresh Seetharaman, CEO and Co-Founder of Virgin Animation, mentored the project at X|Media|Lab and subsequently went on to invest in the film.
3) Comiqs
Online Photo and Drawing to Comic Strip Creation Tool and Publishing Site. This will be a online content platform, where people can easily create, share, rate and view comic-media content. (Singapore)
Outcome: Now in beta stage, funded by Singapore’s Media Development Authority, Interactive Digital Media Program
4) Elastrick
A Branded User-Generated Content System - Socialising the beauty & benefits of high-speed photography.
Elastrick is a responsive environment that captures and distributes branded user generated video content to mobile media devices and the web. A network of sensor-activated, high-speed super slow-motion cameras, integrated into a Skatepark will be connected to a kiosk that will provide skaters, (and BMX riders) the ability to select, manipulate and upload recorded files directly to their mobile phones, iPods or websites. The skatepark becomes a wired playground/performance venue that provides performers an automatic means of recording and distributing the action they capture.
Outcome: It is being rolled out into the Knox City skatepark, and speaking with Skateparks across Asia; entered into business development arrangement with VentureGurus (Singapore & Mumbai)
5) Avalanger
A mobile application to assist non English speakers learn English
Outcome: Bought by three Chinese telcos (initial subscription of 500,000 members) and has been since rolled out through China, SE Asia
6) Mostyle
Mostyle’s lifestyle mobile portal juxtaposes the most popular web community, messaging and memedia exploring features into a totally on-handset 3G experience. Mostyle’s unique system facilitates the publishing of 3G Mobile Sites into a global mobile community.
Outcome: Receipt of AUD$60,000 comet grant – being officially launched in June 2008
7) VastPark
Vastpark is a virtual content platform featuring free tools, revolutionary distributed content syndication and enables you to deploy your own virtual world or online game within seconds royalty free.
Vastpark participated in three X|Media|Labs in 2006 (Melbourne, London, Beijing)
Outcomes: Entered into licensing arrangement with NICTA (met at Melbourne Lab), has received huge press coverage from around the world via XML Network, currently in Closed Beta, Public Beta will be released Mid April.
8) Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet wanted to expand their user-generated content play beyond the Thorn Tree Forum
Outcome: Began rolling out new user-generated content tools in September 2006, their increased presence online led to their buyout by BBC end 2007.
9) Forget The Rules
Australia’s first ‘mobisode’ interactive series which was broadcast across all platforms.
Outcome: Won Best Mobile Award at MIPCOM 2006, now in production with second series.
10) The Good Game Challenge
Good Game is an established ABC TV program by gamers for gamers, and is the premier Gaming show in Australia. The Good Game challenge is a collaborative project which invites the audience to participate in designing and developing a game.
Outcome: Commissioned by the ABC and now part funded by the Australian Film Commission, Good Game Challenge is now underway
11) STOMP (Straights Times Online Mobile Print)
Singapore Press Holdings cross-platform user-generated content initiative.
Outcome: winner of International Awards and has grown to occupy an important places in the minds of those living in Singapore.
12) Project Kwerky (codename only)
Project Kwerky is a seamless integration of editorial, video and community content by young people for young people, targeting the 18 – 24 year old “identity seeker” market.
Outcome: to be launched by Fairfax Digital in April 2008.
13) Myrl.com |Connecting Worlds
A social networking platform for the metaverse.
Outcome: now in private beta mode
14) Yolk
A revolutionary new interactive publishing platform that will allow interactive content to be sent directly to the desktops of users through rich desktop applications, allowing stories to be told with full multimedia experience.
Outcome: funded by the Media Development Authority, now in release with HardBoiled Magazine
15) Elven Legends
MMORG for mobile phones.
Outcome: released throughout Asia and the Middle East

ABC Honours Digital Innovators … and X|Media|Lab!
The Australian Government’s Minister for Broadband, Communication, and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, presented the ABC’s Digital Innovation Awards in Sydney on February 29th. The First Prize was a trip to any X|Media|Lab in 2008 of the winner’s choice.
The ABC, Australia’s national public broadcaster, celebrated their staff’s digital media innovations at the inaugural ABC Innovation Awards.
The nominees included many ABC projects that have participated in previous X|Media|Lab’s, including household names in Australia: Rage, The Chaser’s War on Everything, Good Game, JTV, and The New Inventors.
The winners were Arul Baskaran (who picked up 3 other Innovation Awards as well as the Gold Prize!), and Courtney Gibson, who have both been participants in previous X|Media|Lab’s. We can’t wait to see which XML they choose to attend. They have some amazing locations to choose from: Suzhou or Shanghai in China, Mumbai, Melbourne, Wellington, Seoul, Singapore, or the Middle East.
Rumors abound that Minister Conroy will be officially opening XML Seoul: “Digital Worlds: Virtual, Social, Mobile” in June.
