Clean Sweep for One News in March
A strong month for ONE News has firmly established TVNZ's news service as the leading source of television news for New Zealanders, with a clean sweep of the key 5+ and 25-54 demographics across all bulletins.
TVNZ's flagship bulletin ONE News at 6 recorded its fifth consecutive month of year-on-year growth in March. ONE News now leads 3 News by 212,538 viewers nightly, on average, and is ahead by 23,086 viewers in the 25-54 demographic.*
TVNZ Head of News and Current Affairs Anthony Flannery says the continuous growth is a testament to top quality journalism and hard work.
"Roughly one in every three New Zealanders tunes into ONE News throughout the day, and our dedicated team works hard to provide them with the best possible news service, anytime and anywhere," Flannery said.**
"A huge amount of effort has gone into improving every bulletin; from ONE News Breakfast in the early morning, to ONE News Tonight.
"It's very rewarding to see Kiwis recognising the quality of our bulletins, and tuning in to ONE News throughout the day – and encourages us to redouble our efforts to deliver the very best in journalism.
"We have had a great response to the launch of the new ONE News at 4.30 bulletin, and I am also very proud of the high quality Maori news we deliver with Te Karere, our on-line news service at onenews.co.nz, and our latest news offerings on TVNZ 7 - TVNZ News at 8 and TVNZ News Now."
ONE News was New Zealand's choice for news throughout the day in March. In TV ONE's commercial demographic of 25-54 year-olds, Breakfast attracted 56,827 more viewers daily than Sunrise; ONE News Midday had 14,207 more viewers than Newsday; and ONE News Tonight had 19,535 more viewers than Nightline.
March also saw ONE News bulletins make significant inroads into TV3's target demographic of 18-49. ONE News at 6 had year-on-year growth of 22,816 viewers in the 18-49 demographic, narrowing the gap with 3 News by over 26,619 viewers compared with March 2007.
Breakfast grew its 18-49 audience by 3,803 compared with March 2007, and was watched by an average 51,335 viewers in that demographic – nine times the 5,704 viewers watching Sunrise.
ONE News Tonight had a stellar month in March, adding 19,013 viewers in the 18-49 demographic (compared with March 2007), and overtaking Nightline in TV3's target demographic for the first time in two years. Tonight also increased its lead in the 25-54 and 5+ demographics.
