Recognition of building problems a positive step
Recognition by the Minister of Building and Construction of the costs and problems imposed on local government and the
building industry through implementation of the 2004 Building Act is a positive step forward, says the NZ Building
Industry Federation (BIF).
“That represents step one and now we look forward to his working with local government and the industry to sort out the
problems in quick time” the BIF Chief Executive, Bruce Kohn, said today
“We have been working with building officials for more than two years to find a solution to a number of the problems the
Minister has now recognised drive up new home construction prices. But without Government support and recognition that
they exist progress was reaching an impasse.
“The Minister has breathed new life into the process. His signalled ability to have the Department of Building and
Housing approve designated new home designs and product content for multiple consent approvals through compliance
documents indicates the Department can take action to make process much smoother and less costly for local government,
industry and ultimately taxpayers and ratepayers.
“Establishment of a register instantly available to building officials that lists compliance acceptable products in the
crucial areas of structure and weather tightness would speed up the consents process, produce much needed consistency of
approach across the country, make the task of officials much easier and reduce costs significantly. Let’s get on with
it.”
