New platform for Swanson rail commuters
From Monday 18 February, passengers using the Swanson train station will use a new platform to catch the train out West
or towards Britomart as Auckland's Western Line rail upgrade progresses further.
The new platform, located opposite the existing platform, can be accessed via a temporary pedestrian crossing from
Swanson Road (adjacent to the skate park).
The existing platform will be closed to permit upgrading the station facilities and the construction of track works. The
Swanson train station upgrade is targeted for completion in mid 2008.
Auckland Regional Transport Authority's (ARTA) Chief Executive, Fergus Gammie says, "The new platform will offer
passengers an improved waiting environment, with modern, safe and secure facilities.
"The platform has been built as part of the ongoing regional rail upgrade project. The work is being done by rail
network provider ONTRACK who are building a second track, the platforms and upgrading signalling and ARTA who is
responsible for upgrading the stations, with project support from Waitakere City Council."
The Western line upgrade is a part of Project DART, ONTRACK's $600 million upgrade of Auckland's rail network, and the
Auckland Regional Transport Authority's programme of action for improving rail stations and giving Aucklanders more
frequent and reliable train services.
"Such enhancements are being progressively introduced across the region's public transport network. Rail patronage has
grown by 130% over the last four years, so people are switching on to the benefits," Mr Gammie says.
Clear signage will be in place at the Swanson train station to ensure that passengers know where to catch their train
from, and ARTA and ONTRACK are working closely with train operator Veolia Transport to minimise passenger disruption
while the construction work is being undertaken.
Passengers should allow more time for their journey to the station while they get used to the new access arrangements
and, for their own safety, are reminded to only cross the tracks at official crossings and to stay out of construction
areas.
