Domestic travel activity continues increase
Friday 25 January 2008
Domestic Travel Survey data just released shows that New Zealand travellers spent just under $8.0 billion on-shore in
the year to September 2007, an increase of 10.4% on the previous year. “We’re seeing a very positive pattern for
domestic tourism. Growth in spend has been recorded across our last six release periods”, said Bruce Bassett, Ministry
of Tourism Research Manager.
Spending on overnight trips by New Zealand travellers increased by 10.5% to $5.2 billion with the number of overnight
trips increasing by 7.4% to 15.5 million. Day trip expenditure by New Zealand travellers increased by 10.3% to $2.8
billion with the number of daytrips increasing by 2.5% to 29.4 million.
Mr Bassett added that over the period to September 2007 travel activities by New Zealanders had continued to increase
whether it was for domestic or international travel. The number of New Zealanders travelling overseas increased by 4.1%
over the same period. “This result reflects the continued diversity of travelling within New Zealand. There are strong
pulls to travel off-shore, yet domestic tourism remains the platform for the New Zealand Tourism industry.”
The Domestic Travel Survey is a telephone survey of 15,000 New Zealand residents undertaken throughout the year.
A range of data and reports from the survey are available on the Ministry of Tourism’s research website –
