Freeview On A Roll after Successful 2007
Freeview take-up figures continue to climb steadily upwards, a mere eight months since the launch of free-to-air digital
television and radio in New Zealand. Figures to the end of December show the total number of households reached is an
estimated 78,700 or 5% of all homes.
Steve Browning, General Manger, Freeview, says the continuation of strong growth for the Freeview satellite services is
a result of the increasing demand for the quality viewing experience offered by Freeview. December proved to be a strong
month for Freeview retailers, suggesting a Freeview receiver was a popular gift around the country. "Nearly 200,000 New
Zealanders have tuned into free digital television and will be enjoying crystal clear digital quality pictures and
sound," he says.
"And for a one-off cost and no monthly subscription Kiwi's can enjoy the diversity of content available on ten
television and two radio services. We're quietly confident that with the new services and innovations we have scheduled
for launch this year, such as the Digital Terrestrial service and High Definition, take-up figures will continue to
track well above forecast. The roll-out is progressing well with the transmission infrastructure in place and rigorous
testing already underway," he adds.
