Street scenes for Sir Ed will be reminiscent of troops marching off to war
The Newmarket Business Association says it has had overwhelming support from retailers and businesses to close their
doors as Sir Edmund Hillary's State Funeral procession passes through Newmarket early tomorrow afternoon.
"The positive response we've had has been quite overwhelming, particularly among young people. Everyone is just so
honoured to be part of this very special day. Some have even set up their own in-store tributes," said Cameron Brewer,
general manager of the Newmarket Business Association.
"Without doubt Broadway will come to a standstill. The sheer enormity of the occasion will stop everyone in their
tracks. We are expecting the footpaths and balconies to be thick with people and a deafening silence to fall over
Broadway. Only Sir Ed could command that.
"The last time Newmarket would've witnessed anything remotely like this was when troops marched off to World War Two
nearly 70 years ago.
"The Hillarys have supported many local Newmarket and Remuera businesses over many years. They have very much been part
of the local furniture. To have the procession come through is certainly fitting.”
Mr Brewer says the association endorses the Auckland City Council's call for the public to congregate at the Auckland
Domain. However, he suspects if it is wet weather, people will gravitate to vantage points like Newmarket for cover.
“We are asking commuters to exercise patience in and around Parnell and
Newmarket. There is absolutely no need for any frustration because drivers have had so much warning.“
