Old Fashioned Foods may have answer to new year heat
NIWA's National Climate Summary released on Friday (4 January) showed December 2007 temperatures were above average in most northern and western regions, as well as Southland and much of Otago. The national average temperature of 16.1 ºC was 0.5°C above average.
Recent research carried out by Old Fashioned Foods shows few Kiwis are drinking the recommended eight glasses, or two litres, of water per day, which is imperative as temperatures and humidity start to climb.
"Everyone's heard the saying "drink eight glasses of water a day" but when it comes to human consumption of water, the message is clearly not getting through," says Rachel Beattie, senior brand manager for Old Fashioned Foods.
Ms Beattie says their research shows that while people are aware that they should be drinking more water, it is generally seen as 'flavourless' and 'boring'. It also shows that inadequate consumption triggers a feeling of guilt.
"While some people rely on thirst to remind them to drink, it is important to realise that the thirst mechanism only kicks in with humans when they are already 1-2% dehydrated," Ms Beattie says.
Old Fashioned Foods response has been to introduce a sugar-free addition for water called Vita Quench.
"There's increasing recognition across-the-board that there's both a need to consume more water and less sugar - and we think Vita Quench is a step in this direction.
Vita Quench is initially being launched in four flavours: orange and mango; orange and cranberry; mixed berry and lemon and lime. RRP $4.50 (each pack holds 10 sachets).
Old Fashioned Food's tips to ensure you are drinking enough water:
Ø Drink as a matter of habit - do not rely on thirst
Ø If you're working in an office environment, promote drinking 8 glasses of water a day to your colleagues.
Ø Drink more than the recommended 2 litres if you're working in hot conditions.
Ø Remember that water is much better than alcohol, strong coffee or tea at replacing fluids
Ø To make water more enjoyable, keep some cold in the fridge. Mix with Vita Quench's four great flavours. Slices of lemon, cucumber or a sprig of mint will also add to the appeal.
