Global Day Delivers Action Tool For Million Workers
A million logistics workers will have the chance tomorrow (5 December 2007) to lobby their employers for social justice
during a Global Delivery Action Day. Organised by the ITF, UNI (Union Network International) and transport unions
worldwide, it will give workers the means to persuade the world’s logistics companies to put their stated commitment to
corporate responsibility into action and sign up to a promise of rights for all of their staff – irrespective of the
country in which they’re based.
The day will also allow personnel at logistics companies, including the ‘big four’ – DHL, Fedex, UPS and TNT – a chance
to show just how important a role they play. They will be backed by specially designed materials for them to use such as
parcel tape, stickers and postcards promoting the action day message of promoting social justice across firms and across
national boundaries.
ITF General Secretary David Cockroft commented: “Some of these companies are leaders in developing corporate
responsibility programmes and we would like to see them embrace the idea of trade union rights for all employees, not
just those in the countries in which they are headquartered or where unions are strongest. Just as each of these
enterprises has to take a global view, so do we, and from that has sprung a network of concerned participants.
Tomorrow’s event gives them a particular opportunity to consult, compare and plan ahead.”
UNI General Secretary Philip Jennings added: “Together we’ve been working to identify the areas within this sector
where, as unions, we need to organise. This action day gives all of us a chance to move forward using appropriate
tactics, whether they are education events, rallies or letter writing campaigns.”
