Ancare Scientific Focused on Finding New Solutions For Animal Health
As part of the recently announced partnership between animal health companies Ancare and Merial, Ancare’s R section has been established as a separate business entity, Ancare Scientific, that is focused on opening up new product opportunities.
Led by former Ancare managing director Colin Harvey, the Ancare Scientific initiative is in line with a strong emphasis the Government is putting on stimulating business R
“This country is well placed to play a leading role in our market niche of sheep and cattle parasitology products,” he says.
Director R Pacific for Merial Dr Ron Gogolewski says the new relationship allows Ancare’s proven innovation to be combined with the international animal health expertise of Merial.
The two companies complement each other well. While Merial internationally tends to focus on the development of new proprietary compounds for major world markets, Ancare has had great success in the development of differentiated products from existing compounds, often by improving their formulation or combining them. Ancare has also developed significant intellectual properties around the technologies of combining actives in novel ways.
“It means New Zealand farmers are likely to see more of the kind of products that Ancare has developed.”
While the Centre’s work will focus mainly on Australasia, Ancare Scientific will extend its innovation thrust to meet the needs of major international markets with support from Merial.
“Ancare’s proven research strength lies in the fast and responsive development of new products that target specific needs. This is an aspect we do not want to see compromised. By working together this can be expanded even further,” says Dr Gogolewski.
“Merial will be active in helping to identify areas for research and outlining what product characteristics we should pursue for different markets and then getting those products registered in international markets.”
For agricultural science in New Zealand the new company provides a pipeline to world markets. Research in sheep and cattle parasite resistance in New Zealand is well ahead of other markets as a result of the efforts of Massey University, Lincoln University and AgResearch.
