Greenpeace Ranking irrelevant for New Zealand
“The release of Toxic rankings including Television companies is not relevant to New Zealand as all of these companies
are working to provide a take back scheme for all Televisions in the New Zealand market under the Product Stewardship
provisions of the Waste Minimisation legislation currently before Parliament”, says Garth Wyllie Executive Officer of
the Consumer Electronics Association.
This work has been underway since August of 2006 and the companies did not need prompting by Greenpeace to participate
in the development of a proposed model for taking old televisions back from consumers instead of taking them to
landfill.
“Televisions will be dealt with responsibly and recycled through approved plants designed to remove any environmentally
unfriendly elements” he said
Some of this process will be undertaken outside of New Zealand due to economies of scale however those parts such as
disassembly that can be undertaken in New Zealand, will be, providing it is cost efficient to do so.
This action will remove around 168,000 televisions sets per annum that currently go into landfill recovering precious
metals, glass and plastics that can be used for a range of new products and thus reducing demand on the world’s
resources.
