New Law Hides Significant Downside to the Consumer
“The new Government Regulations announced yesterday in regard to diesel vehicles in particular will do little to address
the environmental problem in the way the government suggests” said Mr Paul Church CEO of Foley Trucks Ltd in Penrose.
“There is no doubt environmental issues need to be addressed but the regulations applied with this new law seem to be
constructed from an office desk rather than in the market place. Over the last two years our company has been addressing
these issues in fact, not just theory. Our stock base consists of what I would describe as ‘environmentally friendly’
late model trucks with very low emission outputs compared with earlier model units. We have even done research and
development on the Toyota Hybrid range of trucks, one of which we have in stock at the moment. Interestingly, while all
of our imported stock is now in the 2000 to 2004 year of manufacture range only the Hybrid will comply with the new
import regulations. While there is an implied upside in regard to emissions with this new law, there is an obvious
downside in higher costs to the company owners which will trickle down to the consumer in higher prices for the products
and services. In my opinion then environmental issue upon which this new law was formulated will have a negative impact
in respect of these rising prices,” said Mr Church. “Surely a more gradual implementation of the law would have been
better for the consumer and the industry as a whole.”
