Public seminar series on animals and the environment
Leading international authority to speak
AgResearch, in conjunction with MAF, will next week be presenting a series of panel discussions in Christchurch,
Wellington and Hamilton on animals and their effect on the environment:
A leading international expert in livestock policy, Dr Henning Steinfeld, will be the key-note speaker at these events.
Dr Steinfeld is head of the livestock sector analysis and policy branch at the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the
UN in Rome, Italy.
He has been working on livestock policy for the last 15 years, in particular focusing on environmental issues, poverty
alleviation and public health protection.
Recently he co-authored a report on the impact of the growing livestock industry on the environment worldwide. In the
report, Livestock’s Long Shadow, he argues that livestock (the global demand for which is estimated to double by 2050),
contribute to some of the most serious environmental problems.
This is of particular interest to New Zealand where the agricultural sector, and in particular livestock, is a
cornerstone of our economic prosperity.
