Independence is Growing: Sentinel launches Independence Guide Series at Ellerslie
Recent research by Sentinel, New Zealand’s leading home equity release provider, shows that older New Zealanders view
the ability to remain independent in their home as important to their continued well-being.
Based on this research Sentinel is launching the first in a series of Sentinel Independence Guides at this year’s
Ellerslie International Flower Show.
Focusing on Independence in the Garden, the guide provides tips on how to adapt the garden to the changing needs and
abilities of older gardeners, and features a range of products for the garden which may make gardening more comfortable.
Sentinel, an award winner at last year’s Ellerslie Garden Show, has developed the Sentinel Independence Garden for the
2008 event to showcase the suggestions and tips in the Independence Guide.
“Gardening is regularly listed as one of New Zealanders’ top leisure activities and there’s no reason they shouldn’t
continue to enjoy it as they age,” says Linda Taylor, Sentinel’s Marketing Director. However with about 50 percent of
the population over the age of 60 and virtually all people over the age of 80 experiencing some degree of osteoarthritis
(according to Arthritis New Zealand statistics) the bending and stretching most people associate with gardening gets
harder and harder. But that doesn’t mean they have to give it up. By highlighting tips and products which can help,
homeowners can continue with the hobby they enjoy, while maintaining the look and value of their home.”
The first Independence Guide is already in demand by community groups nationwide, and will be handed out to visitors to
the Sentinel Independence Garden. This will be followed in the new year by further Guides, looking at different areas of
the home. The Guides will also be available at Mitre 10 stores throughout the country.
“54% of Sentinel clients use some of the funds from their Sentinel Lifetime Loan to make improvements to their home.
Often this is in the garden, kitchen or bathroom, and may be to meet changing needs and abilities of the homeowner,”
says Mrs Taylor. “The Sentinel Independence Guides are designed to help with this process.”
