Historic Canterbury homestead for sale
One of well-known Canterbury architect Heathcote Helmore’s first design projects is up for sale.
Located just 45 minutes north of Christchurch, the six-bedroomed Jedburgh is a beautiful example of an early North Canterbury homestead. The 26-hectare property includes the 370 sq metre homestead, a double garage, a gardener’s home, hay sheds and bay stables.
Helmore was only 29 when he designed Jedburgh for the Maurice McFarlane Family in 1925.
The property, which is subdivided into 13 paddocks, is in the hamlet of Waikari with the Waipara wine growing region 20 minutes away and the relaxing thermal resort of Hanmer just 40 minutes away.
The homestead features a wooden floored entrance hall which flows through to the drawing room which has a large open fire and French doors. There is also a small library, study and new country-style kitchen. The master bedroom has English-style bathroom facilities and in one of the bedrooms you can put your feet up and relax in the adjoining living area. It is the ideal guest room as it also features a separate hallway and outdoor access.
There is a wide verandah with a dining area overlooking a lap pool and gardens beyond.
“Jedburgh is a beautiful example of an early homestead which combines luxurious and easy living with all the modern amenities,” says Bill Whalan, director of Bayleys Canterbury.
“The property is steeped in history with its reputation of being a party house for many after hunt gatherings. The house has been extensively renovated over recent years with an eye on the future and a hold on the past,” Mr Whalan adds.
The vendor is inviting offers in excess of $1.2M plus GST before December 5, 2007.
