Bags to change your – and your child’s – life
Feeling just a little bit guilty about using disposable nappies? At least you can use a stylish, recycled billboard bag
from WAS to carry them around.
Auckland , New Zealand – October 30, 2007- When you think about it, the billboard is the ultimate in contradictions. Used to sell the prospect of a better life
through whichever product or service it features, the irony is that when that particular promotion is over, the canvas
billboard skin is unceremoniously torn down and thrown in a landfill, thereby contributing to the growing pollution we
leave behind for our children.
It’s apt, therefore, that the newest product from WAS – the company recycling these tough billboard skins and giving
them new life as funky, functional bags – has created something especially for children – a baby bag.
Like all of the WAS (as in ‘was something else’) products, each baby bag is unique, having been designed and crafted by
hand.
The design of the baby bag was something that Glenda Keegan, owner of WAS, was determined to get right. “We wanted to
keep it simple enough, but really functional – having space in there for everything you might need, but also not making
the bag so specialised that it would be worthless when baby grew out of nappies. It is primarily a baby bag, but this
material lasts a long time, so we wanted people to be able to use it for other purposes.”
The upshot is a high-volume bag with a total of seven compartments, some internal and some on the outside for quick
access. “From the testing we have done with parents, the word is we have got it right,” says Glenda.
The chic ex-billboard design of the bags is as different from your average nappy bag as it is possible to be, and would
not look out of place at the beach and would definitely turn heads in the street or even at the office.
Billboard skins are made from UV resistant, rip-stop reinforced PVC vinyl, which in English means they are extremely
hard wearing. With material like this, Glenda realised that the construction had to be up to scratch too, hence the
triple-reinforced webbing and industrial strength Velcro flap. Each bag is also hand-sewn with super tough marine
industry thread. With a waterproof and wipeable interior and exterior, the bag is virtually indestructible, which most
parents will agree is handy when you have kids involved.
