Government interest drives new momentum for diesel
Pressure on Government ministers to drop their gas-guzzlers in favour of greener options adds new momentum to the swing towards cleaner diesel power according to Peugeot New Zealand.
Peugeot’s diesel-powered 607 HDi 2.2 is one of three cars selected for evaluation as part of the government’s development of a New Zealand vehicle efficiency strategy.
Peugeot national sales manager Simon Rose sees the government’s lead as a strong recommendation for other government departments and New Zealand motorists in general.
“Fundamentally the cabinet is leading by example and that’s to be applauded. And other government departments are closely following that lead,” Mr Rose says.
In addition to having its HDi 607 recommended as one of the replacements for the existing cabinet fleet, Peugeot has also made presentations to other national and regional government representatives.
Mr Rose says the combination of better quality diesel and new European technology that virtually eliminates particles from diesel engines is driving increased interest in the Peugeot HDi fleet.
“Many people’s opinions of diesel could be coloured by the number of diesel trucks and used Japanese imports on New Zealand roads that use old diesel technology. New European technology has made a huge difference.
“The differences are twofold. First, the diesel is much cleaner with much of the sulphur removed. Second, the Peugeot HDi cars are fitted with world leading emission control filters that remove particles to below measurable levels.
“This combination of new diesel and new technology adds up to a responsible option for both government and private New Zealand drivers.
“Government has recognised this through its recommendation of a Peugeot HDi as one of the replacements for the existing cabinet fleet and others are closely following its lead.”
