Climate Change Paper “Good Framework for Discussion”
Fonterra Co-operative Group says the Sustainable Land Management and Climate Change discussion paper released today has
clearly signalled the Government’s desire for a constructive approach to reducing agricultural greenhouse gas emissions.
“The discussion document puts all the options on the table and provides a good framework for the discussions that need
to take place among all parties,” said Fonterra Director of Milk Supply, Barry Harris.
“Fonterra is committed to sustainability and to working constructively with the Government, not only on emissions but
also across the wider discussions relating to climate change, including the energy strategy which also has a significant
impact on the industry.
“As we work to take the discussion document forward, Fonterra will also continue to progress our own initiatives which
support sustainable dairying.”
He cited work under the Clean Streams Accord to have farmers adopt nutrient budgeting and the research work of the
Pastoral Greenhouse Gas Research Consortium, chaired by Fonterra’s General Manager of Sustainable Milk Growth, Mark
Leslie, which is focused on technologies to reduce emissions.
“We look forward to continued support from Government for this work.”
Mr Harris said that the importance of agriculture to the economy meant the options released today would need to be
thoroughly debated to ensure the best economic and environmental outcomes.
“The discussion also needs to take into account New Zealand’s role as the world’s major source of dairy and our low
emissions per unit of production.”
