Fisheries Act Amendments a Surprise, says New Zealand Seafood Industry
7th December 2006
The Minister of Fisheries announcement of the government’s intention to change the 1996 Fisheries Act has ‘come out of the blue’, said New Zealand Seafood Industry Council chief executive Owen Symmans.
“It is a complete surprise. There has been no consultation with the industry,” he said.
Mr Symmans said that it is impossible for the industry to make any sensible comment until it has seen the details of the proposed changes. The seafood industry is committed to the twin concepts of utilisation and sustainability that underpin the Fisheries Act, he said.
