Fibre link brings Tauranga Unplugged closer
TelstraClear has begun laying the fibre network that will connect cell sites on the Tauranga Unplugged project.
The fibre will also link the Unplugged wireless service with TelstraClear’s national network.
TelstraClear Unplugged Project Director David Owen says the company is laying about 12 kilometres of fibre in the city.
“We’re laying fibre from now until the end of March, in the suburbs of Otumoetai, Brookfield, Gate Pa, Greerton, Papamoa
and Mt Maunganui. It will link the wireless network with our national fibre ‘backbone’.”
“Tauranga Unplugged is on track for a July 2007 launch. This new service will use the latest 3G wireless technology to
make voice, broadband and mobile simple and accessible for homes and businesses.”
Costing $50m, the service includes the development of a high-speed wireless network that lets you talk and use broadband
wherever you are, whenever you want to in Tauranga city.
TelstraClear is working closely with the Tauranga City Council and the community on the resource consent process for the
wireless network.
