Broadband Made Easy
Ericsson release a guide to understanding broadband terms and capabilities
Today Ericsson, one of the world’s leading broadband network technology providers, released “Broadband Made Easy”, a
simple guide which aims to demystify broadband terminology and plainly illustrate and compare what the different types
of broadband can deliver to a typical household.
Ericsson’s Broadband Made Easy defines terms including Satellite, ADSL, ADSL2+, Cable Modem, 3G/HSPA, Fibre, WiMAX and
Ethernet. Included in the guide is a table that succinctly compares the real-world capability of different broadband
technologies.
Industry analysts, Ovum Australia, provided input into the guide, researching carriers and services around the world.
Ovum analyst, David Kennedy, says: “Broadband is used for more than just Internet. For example, an ADSL service or
broadband over your telephone line, usually allows one desktop PC and one normal phone. But with full ADSL2+, you can
use a PC, a laptop computer, two phones and a high definition TV simultaneously.”
Steve Inglis, General Manager Marketing for Ericsson NZ says that in another five years time, the world will have around
1.5 billion broadband subscriptions over fixed and mobile access.
“Broadband connectivity has become the fastest growing telecom service offering ever: already over 250 million
households have hooked up to broadband on a fixed access, and now we are adding mobile broadband subscribers as well.
Ericsson see broadband access as a fundamental utility for any modern economy. We have found that many people are quite
understandably confused by the jargon and complications of broadband. As we move from basic access to Full-Service
broadband with many new services we felt it was important to help people understand what their choices might be in this
exciting new environment,” added Mr. Inglis.
