More Kiwis wanting beach baches this summer
Hundreds of thousands of Kiwis are preparing to head to their Kiwi baches this summer and there is no sign of the tradition abating, a leading accommodation operator said today.
Leslie Preston of Bachcare NZ said they had seen an increase in bookings from the domestic market.
``The Kiwi infatuation with the good old kiwi bach is stronger than ever. Interest has been enormous these last six weeks from Kiwis in their annual desire to escape to beaches and lakes,’’ she said.
``We see no signs of interest declining in the summer holiday bach and our recent survey found holiday homes were by far the favourite accommodation choice for Kiwis.’’
Fifty-three percent of all survey respondents said holiday homes were their preferred accommodation type, followed by motels at 20 percent, camping grounds at 14 percent and hotels at 12 percent.
``We have seen an increased interest in the last month which shows more people want to get away from the pressures of every day live and kick back with a sausage and a glass of wine on the deck at the beach,’’ Preston said.
``Kiwis love to rent out private holiday homes due to the convenience, freedom, comfort, and relaxation. Why stay in a crowded and cramped hotel room when you can spread out and enjoy the complete privacy and freedom of your own slice of heaven.
``Of those Kiwis who stayed in baches over the holidays, our survey found 48 percent preferred to stay in modern holiday homes with another 44 percent preferring the traditional Kiwi bach and three percent in holiday apartments.
Bachcare asked why the good old Kiwi bach was not dead and many people said the baches were very much a big part of the Kiwi psyche.
Apartments are also becoming an alternative option. Many people want luxuries and amenities they have in their city lives to be available to them on their holidays, and holiday apartments are a great way to have both.
They usually have great views and many have the use of shared facilities such as pools and tennis courts.
Preston is this year’s NZ Sales and Marketing Institute’s entrepreneur marketer of the year.
The institute said her creation of a total bach care service for owners and renters had hit a chord with holiday-makers nationwide.
They were also a finalist in the New Zealand Tourism Awards 2006. Bachcare manages more than 250 holiday homes all over New Zealand. Their company has doubled in volume in the last 12 months.
