Auckland’s Port Must Be Protected
Whichever way the stadium debate goes, the port of Auckland must be protected, says Keith Kelly, president of the
Auckland province of Federated Farmers.
“The efficient and successful operation of Ports of Auckland is vital to the success of agriculture in New Zealand. Its
future is critical from an economic perspective,” said Mr Kelly.
The Ports of Auckland is New Zealand's largest international container port and a major gateway for trade.
It handles four million tonnes of breakbulk cargo a year and over 670,000 container units a year, which is 50 percent of
the North Island container trade and 38 percent of New Zealand's total container trade.
“Any consideration of the water front stadium must take into account the importance of New Zealand’s largest port to the
country’s economy,” said Mr Kelly.
