New Zealand ingenuity sees world-first pre-prepared ‘toastie’ now available
New Zealand consumers will be the first in the world to try the new Wattie’s® Toasties™ product produced at the
company’s processing plant in Hastings.
After a flurry of worldwide interest earlier this year, Marketing Director Mike Pretty confirms that following months of
research and development, world-first Toasties are now available in-store:
“The product is a natural development for Wattie’s. Toasted sandwiches have been a Kiwi favourite for decades - made
from the traditional sandwich iron to the electric toastie maker of today. Wattie’s have taken it one step further,
making it even more convenient to have your favourite toasted snack.
“Wattie’s Toasties seal delicious fillings between two slices of oat bran bread, ready to be thawed from the freezer and
heated in the toaster in minutes. No more messy toasted sandwich makers.
“The challenges have been getting the home-made taste and keeping the filling in the sandwich. For the latter, we’re
using special NZ-developed technology to seal the sandwich. This is a patented process.
“We wanted to maintain the home-made flavour of the different varieties, and we had fun experimenting with numerous
options until we found the top five fillings. Of course it was also important that we create a high quality product – in
particular with our Wattie’s Baked Bean Toastie.
“The Baked Bean Toasties required extensive and ongoing testing to truly replicate the distinctive flavour of Wattie’s
baked beans on toast. The Wattie’s traditional Baked Bean recipe is a Kiwi favourite with 27 million cans consumed per
year. We are always looking for ways to get more of this “superfood” into the diet. We know we’ve cracked it as everyone
who tries a Wattie’s Toastie can’t get enough, so we are very excited to now launch the product to Kiwi consumers,” says
Mike.
The product has captured attention in the UK, Australian and Japanese markets where it may be introduced after New
Zealand demand has been met.
There are five delicious flavours in the range: Ham, Cheese and Onion; Cheese and Onion; Corn and Cheese; Cheese Lovers;
and Baked Beans.
Wattie’s Toasties are available in supermarket freezers now.
