National awards single out ‘trendsetting building’
A multi-million-dollar ‘trendsetting’ building housing Queenstown’s first five-star hotel has garnered national recognition for a local building company.
At the ‘Registered Master Builders 2006 House of the Year and Commercial Project Awards’ held in Auckland, Amalgamated Builders Ltd was named winner of the Seismic Tourism and Leisure Commercial Project category.
Amalgamated Builders was singled out for the construction of the five-star Sofitel Queenstown, for Auckland-based Perron Group.
“Winning this national award in the commercial project category is wonderful recognition for the Amalgamated Builders team and the Sofitel project team,” said Karsten Pedersen, Amalgamated Builders’ Central Otago manager.
"By virtue of its scale, Queenstown doesn't have the same size of skilled labour pool to draw on as the main centres, which makes the winning of a national award recognising excellence in project management, quality workmanship and timeliness of Sofitel a very notable achievement.”
Judges commended the Amalgamated Builders team for the exceptionally high quality of the development.
“Only the finest materials and finishings were used in this luxurious building. The contractor’s ability to bring the many facets of this project together highlights their skill and has resulted in a trendsetting building that will impress for years to come. The builder is to be commended," judges said.
The over-arching design philosophy was for the building to sit comfortably in its environment, and to look like it had been there for years.
Sofitel Queenstown has several elements which are simple, modern interpretations of detail found in one or more of the classic Queenstown buildings: the portal column detail creating relief on the large external elevations, high level "eyebrows", Juliette balconies and their subtle cast branding logos.
“Together with a great team of trade staff, subcontractors and key suppliers we’re really proud of the development and I’d especially like to praise Greg Brown, Geoff Cotton, Brett Squire, Svend Pedersen and site foremen Kevin Cournane, Richard Wiersma, Roger Kennedy, Colin Herd and Peter Albon,” said Pedersen.
“Our client, Perron Group, created a great culture for this project. Not only were they focused on achieving a truly five-star quality hotel, but it was also important to them how they got there, and relationships they formed during the process. Cam Marsh, Mark Perriam and their team were a privilege to work with."
Perron Group directors, Cameron Marsh and Mark Perriam were present at the award ceremony and are extremely proud of the commitment and passion Amalgamated Builders have placed on this job.
“The exceptional workmanship of Amalgamated Builders continues to attract recognition for Sofitel Queenstown and we’re very pleased the development was singled out; we faced some stiff competition,” said Marsh.
“The vision we had for the development was significantly enhanced by the team’s thoughtful approach, consideration for aesthetic appeal and attention to detail,” added Marsh
"We’re really pleased to see other regional success at the national awards with A J Saville Builder Ltd and Harraway Building Ltd also winning in their categories," said Pedersen.
