PRESS RELEASE for immediate release
WAITAKI WINE BRAND NAMED A GLOBAL STAR
Jancis Robinson is widely regarded as one of the world’s best wine critics and judges. Having just released her third
edition of “The Oxford Companion to Wine”, she recently selected nine wines from around the world that she says “were so
good they are destined to become classics of the future, despite not existing in 1999 when her last edition of the
Companion came out.”
The breakdown of the nine wines included a sole New Zealand wine, Waitaki Braids 2004 Pinot Noir, with the remainder
from Australia, France, Germany, South Africa, Italy, Portugal, Argentina and Spain. Incredibly, the 2004 Pinot Noir was
the Company’s inaugural wine and was only launched six months ago. The wines of Waitaki Braids are from New Zealand’s
most exciting new wine region - the majestic Waitaki Valley, “the Jewel” of North Otago. These limited edition hand
crafted wines are a portrait of the area’s limestone rich soils and extended growing season.
As stated by one of New Zealand’s leading wine commentators Bob Campbell (Master of Wine), “this is a fantastic
endorsement from one of the world’s leading wine authorities. Jancis Robinson is widely followed by many trend-setters
in the wine world. It’s a great coup for Waitaki Braids that will certainly help to put their region on the world wine
map”. Waitaki Braids principal Stephen Cozens echoed Bob Campbell’s comments on the Waitaki Valley’s terroir, but added
“this really highlights Michelle Richardson’s star quality on the world stage – she continues to surprise us with simply
amazing wines (Michelle is also a shareholder of Waitaki Braids)”.
The Company is yet to formally release its next wine, the Waitaki Braids 2006 Riesling, but a private tasting just after
bottling had Joelle Thomson (NZ Herald Wine Critic) including it in her top 10 New Release New Zealand white wines for
2006.
Waitaki Braids will formally release its 2006 Riesling at an invitation-only function at “dine by Peter Gordon” in
Auckland on February 6, 2007 (Peter Gordon is also a shareholder of Waitaki Braids). As well as the tasting of the
Waitaki Braids Riesling and Pinot Noir by Michelle Richardson, Peter Gordon will present a wide selection of regional
Waitaki cuisine specifically prepared to match the wines. The evening will include a cheese tasting by internationally
renowned Master of Cheese, Juliet Harbutt. Waitaki Braids loyalty club members will be invited to the tasting. Customers
can join the club through the Company’s web site www.waitakibraids.co.nz
