17 Star Volunteer Coaches go for National Title
The 17 regional winners in the 2006 Wattie’s Volunteer Coach of the Year Awards have been named and now vie for the
prestigious title, Wattie’s Volunteer Coach of the Year 2006! In an overwhelming response, more than 2,700 entries were
received from all corners of New Zealand.
The vast number of heartfelt nominations shows just how valuable these dedicated individuals are to their sport and
communities. The entries told stories of enthusiasm, support and going above and beyond the ordinary. Nominations
recognised sports as diverse as croquet, outrigger canoeing and equestrian as well as the well-known favourites rugby,
hockey, netball and soccer.
After a rigorous regional judging process, Wattie’s and SPARC are pleased to name these 17 regional winners for the 2006
Wattie’s Volunteer Coach of the Year awards.
The 17 regional winners are now considered by the national judging panel. National judges are Mike McHugh, National
Coaching Consultant for SPARC and coach to the NZ Tall Ferns; former NZ Silver Ferns Captain Waimarama Taumaunu; former
NZ Black Sticks Captain Suzie Muirhead; John F Reid, Senior Advisor Talent Development at SPARC and former New Zealand
Cricket player and Mike Pretty, General Marketing Manager for Wattie’s.
The national Wattie’s Volunteer Coach of the Year will be named at a special awards event in Auckland on November 10.
