Bernadine leading ‘Best Newsreader’ in
New Zealand’s biggest people’s choice TV awards
TVNZ's weekend newsreader Bernadine Oliver-Kerby is giving her high-profile colleagues a run for their money in TV Guide's annual Best on the Box People's Choice Awards.
Bernadine, who lost out to Wendy Petrie for the position of co-anchor of the prestigious week-night One News, is currently leading the poll as the country's favourite newsreader. This puts her ahead of all other newsreaders including One News' co-anchor Simon Dallow and TV3's Hilary Barry and Mike McRoberts.
Media coverage in recent months has highlighted a drop in ratings for One News, as well as controversy surrounding its recent text campaign.
"Bernadine has always been popular with TV Guide readers, but I have to say I am quite surprised to see her leading the pack," says Editor Julie Eley.
"But then that is the beauty of the Best on the Box Awards - we get to know what TV viewers really think."
Dumped former newsreader Judy Bailey is also proving popular with TV Guide readers. The Maori TV Anzac Day Special Broadcast she co-presented with Wena Harawira is leading the Best Documentary category in the Awards.
"That was landmark television, and it's not surprising to see it doing so well," says Julie.
"However, it is early days and things are changing all the time. The votes are still flooding in, and nothing’s final."
Voters can make their picks online at www.tv-guide.co.nz/BOTB or by using the special voting form included in the TV Guide issue on sale October 12. All voters go in the draw to win a major HP prize pack valued at $3000.
TV Guide’s the Best on the Box Awards give Kiwis an opportunity to vote for their favourite TV stars across a range of categories, including Best News Presenter, Sexiest Woman, and Funniest Person on TV.
TV Guide is New Zealand’s top selling weekly magazine, featuring TV listings ahead of any other publication. The Best on the Box Awards results will be published in the TV Guide issue on sale November 9.
