Shiraz stars at New Zealand International Wine Show
A total of 121 gold medals were awarded at the 2006 New Zealand International Wine Show. This was from a record 2150 entries, making it the largest wine competition ever held in New Zealand.
The standout class was Shiraz with a remarkable 26 gold medals awarded but the strength of Australian wines in the category was demonstrated with every one of the Shiraz Gold Medals going to Australian wines.
The Champion Shiraz was St John’s Road Blood and Courage Shiraz 2005 from the Barossa Valley and this outstanding wine was ultimately awarded the Nissan Champion Wine of the Show Trophy.
The most successful categories included Chardonnay with 18 gold medals, Sauvignon Blanc with 14 gold medals and Pinot Noir with 11 gold medals.
The judging team, led by Bob Campbell MW, included four fellow Masters of Wine, numerous leading winemakers and guest overseas judge Kym Milne MW from South Australia. This was the largest and most experienced team of judges ever assembled at a wine competition in New Zealand.
