Marlborough Takes Perth By Storm
• Two iconic Marlborough wineries take out top awards at the prestigious Perth Royal Wine Show in Australia.
• Marlborough’s international pinot noir reputation continues to build.
Two wineries have been flying the flag for Marlborough and New Zealand at the prestigious Perth Royal Wine Show in Australia. Mount Riley has won a double-whammy of trophies for Best Sauvignon Blanc and for Best 2006 Dry White Wine, and Nautilus Estate has won the trophy for Best Pinot Noir.
These were the only trophies to be awarded to New Zealand wineries, beating off high-calibre competition from throughout New Zealand and Australia, and once again demonstrating the outstanding quality of wines grown and made in this region.
“We are absolutely delighted to win the trophy for best pinot” says Nautilus winemaker, Clive Jones. “Marlborough pinot noir sometimes gets overlooked due to the fantastic white wines produced by the region but this trophy shows that we are up there with the best. We think the Nautilus pinot noir is pretty special, and it is great to receive recognition of that from the show circuit – especially considering how important Australia is as a market for New Zealand wines: trophy results really count there”.
Bill Hennessey, Chief Winemaker at Mount Riley Wines is similarly pleased: “At Mount Riley we are all thrilled to receive a double trophy for our 2006 sauvignon blanc. Since our first vintage in 1996 we have consistently produced wines of outstanding quality and value. This recognition shows that Mount Riley sauvignon blanc is as good as it gets and is a great reward for our vineyard and winery staff”.
Held every September, the 2006 Perth Royal Wine Show drew 2,767 entries from 393 wineries. Judging was carried out over four days by 16 judges from both Australia and the United Kingdom, and nine associate judges. The Perth show has been running for some 40 years, and is one of the most prestigious Australian wine shows.
