Cargo Values Are Up
The value of export cargo loaded and import cargo unloaded at New Zealand ports rose by 5.4 percent and 5.7 percent, respectively, during the June 2006 year, Statistics New Zealand said today. Conversely, over the same period, the weight of export cargo loaded and import cargo unloaded fell by 0.2 percent and 5.5 percent, respectively.
The port of Auckland had the largest rise in the value of export cargo loaded during the June 2006 year compared with the June 2005 year. The main commodities contributing to this increase were milk and creams, mechanical machinery, and aircraft and parts. New Plymouth recorded the largest fall in the weight of export cargo loaded during the year.
The port of Whangarei had the largest rise in the value of import cargo unloaded during the June 2006 year. The largest fall in the weight of import cargo unloaded was recorded at the port of Wellington, followed by Christchurch (Lyttelton). Crude oil was the main contributor to both the increase in value and the decrease in weight.
