Transpower regrets power outage for top of the South island
Transpower says today’s loss of electricity supply to the top of the South Island was the result of human error.
Supply to North Canterbury, Marlborough, Nelson and Buller was cut at 4.35pm.
Communications Manager Chris Roberts says contractors were working at the Islington substation in Christchurch when an
error was made, cutting the supply between Christchurch and Nelson.
“After the problem was identified and corrected, we were able to begin restoring the supply at 5.30pm and all regions
were reconnected by 7pm.
“We apologise to everyone affected. Having just spent $80 million upgrading the transmission network into the top of the
South Island, it is particularly disappointing that human error has resulted in a loss of supply.”
