Three Outstanding Additions to Manukau Business Hall of Fame
Three business leaders were inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Westpac Manukau Business Excellence Awards on September 8 at a gala dinner.
Peter Leitch, Noel Robinson and Dick Hubbard were inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Mayor of Manukau, Sir Barry Curtis.
“These three business leaders have made long term commitments to business in Manukau City and continue to demonstrate leadership in their communities,” says Sir Barry Curtis.
“It is the vision and determination of business people like these that are driving the growth of Manukau. I congratulate them and trust that they will continue to play an important role in our region.”
Westpac’s General Manager for Business Banking, Bruce McLachlan, also welcomed the additions to the Hall of Fame.
“The Hall of Fame recognises the importance that business plays in New Zealand society. These are outstanding additions to the Hall of Fame and their recognition is very well deserved,” says Bruce McLachlan.
Peter Leitch QSM, best known as “The Mad Butcher”, is the man behind The Mad Butcher Chain which at present has 35 stores. In 1991 Peter Leitch was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for community services.
He has a keen interest in all sports clubs and also in non-profit organisations such as the S.P.C.A, of which he is a patron, and also the Dyslexic Society. He is also Ambassador for the Arthritis Foundation. This is but a few of his responsibilities. He has formed with Suburban Newspapers a Trust called “The Mad Butcher – Suburban Newspapers Community Trust”.
Peter is best known for his strong following of the game of Rugby League. He is currently Ambassador and Football Manager of the New Zealand Kiwis, and also the Honorary Ambassador of the Vodafone Warriors, and renowned for his generous support of sports and charities around New Zealand.
Former chairman and managing director of Robinson Industries, Noel Robinson. Noel was made a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and the community in the recent Queens Birthday Honours List.
Since selling the business in 1999 he has been actively involved with the Counties Manukau Community. He is chairman of the Counties Manukau Pacific Trust, which developed this TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre. He is Chairman of the Estate of Sir Woolf Fisher and Chairman of Highbrook Developments Limited.
Dick Hubbard, along with his wife, Diana, created Hubbard Foods in 1988. Dick is an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit and holds a Bachelor of Food Technology, a Diploma in Industrial Management and he was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Massey University.
In October 1997, Dick founded the New Zealand Businesses for Social Responsibility, which is an organisation established for the purpose of pro-actively encouraging and fostering the concept of social responsibility in business - to help businesses look at the "bigger picture" as to the reason for their existence. The Business’s for Social Responsibility was later amalgamated with the Environmental Business Network to form the Sustainable Business Network.
Dick became the Mayor of Auckland in 2004. He is imprinting his personal style in an effort to make a significant impact in Social Economic and Environmental ways on Auckland City. He is presently a director of Outward Bound, Councillor of Massey University, and Trustee of NZ National Parks and Conservation Foundation.
The best of Manukau’s businesses were celebrated at the 2006 Westpac Manukau Business Excellence Awards gala dinner on September 8. The seven winning businesses were recognised, along with long standing members of the business community and those making an outstanding contribution to the community.
