All Telecom Services Restored
Phone service has been restored to customers hit by a fibre optic cable
cut north of Dunedin.
All services that had been affected were back by 3.20pm today.
A telecommunications fibre was cut between Palmerston and Waikouaiti at
10.36am this morning. Phone service to about 12,000 landline customers in
an area between Kurow and Invercargill was affected.
Telecom General Manager Technology Operations Kelly Moore said during the
fault some customers could still make calls at times, but some times they
got a call overloading signal and had to redial.
“This event also affected Internet and data services, including ATM and
EFT-POS machines and some mobile coverage,” Ms Moore said.
“We know how frustrating any fault is for customers and it’s a relief that
our teams were able to do the repair work quicker than we had hoped.
“The fibre cut was caused by a third party contractor whose digger cut the
the fibre cable while carrying out excavation work to repair an
underground culvert. The culvert was located on the road just south of
Palmerston,” Ms Moore said.
