Animal Neglect Unacceptable
Federated Farmers will under no circumstances tolerate the wilful neglect of stock, and supports efforts to ensure
animal welfare incidents are quickly resolved, said Charlie Pedersen, President of Federated Farmers of New Zealand.
Mr Pedersen’s comments follow recent cases in the media which show a small number of farmers are not taking care of
their stock to an acceptable standard.
“These people are in the minority and tarnish the reputation of the majority of responsible farmers who value their
stock and look after them, even in challenging times.
“Nearly all professional farmers are doing all they can for their stock in what has been an exceptionally cold and wet
winter.
“Federated Farmers will always back responsible farmers who are working hard to look after their animals, but it will
not defend the small minority of farmers who are not following best practice,” said Mr Pedersen.
Federated Farmers has overseen the production of an animal welfare toolkit to help those involved in dealing with animal
welfare incidents. To download visit:

Federated Farmers has an agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to collaborate on animal welfare issues
relating to commercial agriculture.
“The role of Federated Farmers during welfare incidents is to ensure the best outcome for the animals involved by giving
advice to MAF on their handling, and if necessary sourcing the expert stockmen required,” said Mr Pedersen.
Farmers or others who are concerned about animal welfare on farms should contact the Ministry of Agriculture and
Forestry on 0800 327 027.
