Construction Powers Industry Job Growth
Job growth in the year to June 2005 was highest in the mining; construction; electricity, gas and water supply industry
(up 12.1 percent) Statistics New Zealand said today. This rise was driven by more jobs in construction, according to the
latest data from the Linked Employer-Employee Data (LEED). The second-highest job growth was in property and business
services (up 6.4 percent).
These two industries were also the fastest growing in the June 2004 year. Growth in mining; construction; electricity,
gas and water supply was highest in Manawatu-Wanganui region (up 15.4 percent) while growth in property and business was
highest in Waikato (up 13.4 percent). In the June 2005 year, there was stronger growth in the average number of filled
jobs (up 3.9 percent) than in the June 2004 year (up 3.5 percent).
The finance and insurance ($15,170 per quarter) and government administration and defence ($12,760 per quarter)
industries paid workers the highest mean earnings for full-quarter jobs in the June 2005 year. The average for all
industries was $9,960.
Average mean quarterly earnings rose in every industry in the year to June 2005. Health and community services had the
highest percentage increase (up 5.8 percent), followed by education (up 4.9 percent) and finance and insurance (up 4.7
percent).
This is the second of a series of quarterly releases to focus on different dimensions of the LEED on a rotational
basis. Specific emphasis this quarter is on industry analysis.
