New Site Specifically For Grownups
The days when the older generation threw their hands up in horror when the grandchildren talked about “surfing the Net”
and “going on-line” have long since passed by for many older kiwis.
They are increasingly finding the Internet a safe, efficient and comprehensive source of information and entertainment.
With such a wealth of information out there, two innovative computer enthusiasts with a particular interest in the fast
growing sector of older computer users, have launched a free website for ‘GrownUps’. The site pulls together information
and services available to older people and those assisting family & friends in their retirement and leisure time planning, all in one place.
Shane Bradley (from http://www.finda.co.nz) and Richard Poole (from Co-Pilot Marketing Partners) have utilised their knowledge of the Internet & 50+ market to create http://www.GrownUps.co.nz.
It seems the Founders are not alone in feeling that GrownUps provides a relevant free community service. Sentinel, the
market leader in Home Equity Release Mortgages for people 60 years and over, recently became a major site sponsor.
Since launching last month Grown Ups is already gaining traction not only with senior users (August will see upwards of
15,000 unique visitors), but also with companies who recognise the value of the growing older market.
“The 50+ age group is one of the fastest growing on the Internet.” Mr Poole says. “Older people have the time to learn
the new technologies. They not only wish to stay in touch with their grandchildren via email, but also want to learn
about new developments, policies & issues that may affect them and find the best ways to make use of their leisure time, without hassle.”
“We wanted to provide a truly user-friendly portal – something that would provide a wide range of services for each
visitor to the site.”
The site has been designed to be navigation-friendly and with the ability to increase the size of the print on the
screen. There’s live radio, news and weather updates.
“We also provide club, organisation and services directories as well as retirement village and home care listings
throughout NZ.” says Mr Poole.
To make the site more useful, an email Reminder system allows users to add information such as birthdays, anniversaries,
bills to pay, vehicle WOF/registration, doctor’s appointments, when to plant the garden or anything else they wish to be
reminded about.
Online daily games and puzzles include sudoku, crosswords, word search, code cracker and others all free of charge.
“We often read how important it is to keep our minds active.” Mr Poole says.
The site aims to continue building relationships with organisations such SeniorNet, Greypower and the RSA so that users
can find local community information in one place.
“We have developed a place where older New Zealanders feel that the information they will find is relevant, credible and
trustworthy,” Mr Poole says.
“In the coming months we’re very interested in growing those key areas that users have been providing feedback on,
including Travel, Health, Food, Investment and products of interest.
“Our next step is to ensure every sports and community service organisation that the opportunity exists for them to list
their details and any of their upcoming events, for Free.
The GrownUps site has developed loyal support from older New Zealanders, such as retired builder and RSA member Mr
Warren Taylor.
“I’ve used a computer for years, and I think the GrownUps site has some great information on it. The online games can be
a good challenge, too!”, says Mr Taylor.
