The Office, Little Britain, direct to mobile
Mobile users across Australasia will be able to download clips from smash hit BBC titles The Office, Little Britain and Doctor Who, amongst others, after the conclusion of a deal between BBC Worldwide and Vodafone in both New Zealand and Australia.
3G mobiles on both sides of the Tasman will come alive with cries of “I’m a lay-dee!” or “I want that one” as classic clips, stills, and ring tones from these series and others, including The League of Gentlemen, Goodness Gracious Me, and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps become available for download.
The deal marks the first time this content has been licensed for mobile download outside the UK, and the first time any BBC content has been made available to mobile users in New Zealand.
The deal incorporates more than 250 classic clips, including:
• A supposedly wheelchair-bound Andy jumping off the high diving board at the local pool, in Little Britain
• David Brent’s horrific charity dance, in The Office
• The monstrous Pauline dominating her Jobseekers once again in The League of Gentlemen
• Bhangraman, the international superhero and superb bhangra dancer, coming to the rescue, in Goodness Gracious Me
• Gareth’s stapler getting encased in jelly, again, in The Office
• Teen delinquent Vicky Pollard telling her social worker she’s swapped her baby for a Westlife CD in Little Britain.
Clips are between 30 seconds and 3 minutes in length. Users of 2G phones will be able to purchase all ring tones and stills, and clips of up to 2 minutes in length.
“Iconic moments from some of the BBC’s most loved programmes are now available any time, any place,” said Louisa Bayles, BBC Worldwide Australasia’s Sales Manager, Digital Media. “As David Brent would say, this deal represents a new Dawn for the BBC.”
Tim Nichols, Head of Vodafone live! added “Licensing the cream of BBC comedy, such as Little Britain and The Office, is a key part of our content strategy. These properties will translate very well to mobile and provide bite size chunks of classic comedy for viewing 24/7. We really hope our customers enjoy them."
