Key Equipment Makers Select Intel’s Rosedale 2 WiMAX Silicon
Rosedale 2 Enables Cost-Effective Dual-Mode Fixed and Mobile WiMAX Modems
Intel Corporation’s next-generation WiMAX silicon, codenamed Rosedale 2, has been selected by ten key WiMAX equipment
vendors to deliver next-generation solutions for WiMAX networks. Rosedale 2 is a low-cost system-on-chip that supports
IEEE 802.16-2004 and IEEE 802.16e-2005, enabling WiMAX modems for use with fixed or mobile networks.
Rosedale 2 will be able to take advantage of the mobile WiMAX networks being deployed worldwide by infrastructure
providers such as Alcatel. As part of a broader collaboration to accelerate the deployment of mobile WiMAX, Rosedale 2
is a part of Alcatel’s global Interoperability Testing campaign. “Rosedale 2-based devices are thus expected to work
seamlessly with Alcatel’s Universal WiMAX (802.16e-2005) solution, which natively supports fixed, nomadic and mobile
usage,” said Sylvie Richir, vice president of Alcatel’s Broadband Wireless Business Unit.
In addition, current customers of Intel’s earlier fixed solution, the Intel PRO/Wireless 5116 wireless modem (previously
codenamed Rosedale), including Airspan Networks, Alvarion, Aperto Networks, Axxcelera Broadband Wireless, Proxim
Wireless, Redline Communications, Siemens Home and Office Communication Devices and SR Telecom all plan to deliver WiMAX
solutions based on Rosedale 2. Because it is pin compatible with the Intel PRO/Wireless 5116 wireless modem, Rosedale 2
offers an easy upgrade path for these customers.
Navini Networks, which is focused solely on mobile WiMAX, also intends to use Rosedale 2 for its personal broadband
solutions.

high-speed internet via WiMAX,” said Yung Hahn, general manager of Intel’s WiMAX Products Division. “Rosedale 2 delivers
dual-mode capabilities that we expect to help accelerate the deployment of WiMAX networks. Adding this to the family of
mobile WiMAX products we have disclosed, Intel is poised to deliver the key components needed for successful WiMAX
networks.”
Rosedale 2 delivers mobile capabilities and was designed to enable equipment makers to evolve their modems from fixed to
mobile applications with a simple software upgrade. Using Rosedale 2-based devices, carriers can choose to immediately
deploy a mobile WiMAX network or deploy a fixed WiMAX network now that can be easily and cost-effectively upgraded to a
mobile network.
Rosedale 2 adds to Intel’s anticipated family of mobile WiMAX solutions, which also includes a mobile WiMAX PC card and
a single-chip multi-band Wi-Fi/WiMAX radio, codenamed Ofer, which were disclosed earlier this year.
Rosedale 2 is currently sampling to customers.
