New power records for Wellington and South Island
The peak electricity demand records crept higher yesterday for the South Island and Wellington.
As System Operator, Transpower recorded a South Island peak demand of 2252 MW (megawatts) between 5.30 and 6pm yesterday (5th July).
This surpassed four previous records set in the previous fortnight. Last year’s South Island record was 2224 MW.
A new Wellington peak electricity demand was also observed last evening. The peak of 646 MW surpassed the 640 MW recorded on the 22 June. Last year’s peak demand in Wellington was 605 MW.

North Island 4505 MW 29/06/06 up 2.7%
South Island 2252 MW 28/06/06 up 1.3%
Auckland/Northland 2133 MW 23/06/06 up 6.8%
Wellington 646 MW 05/07/06 up 6.8%
Christchurch/upper SI 1081 MW 04/07/06 up 4.0%
