Accountants Disciplinary Tribunal Strikes Off Member
The Disciplinary Tribunal of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand met to consider charges against two
members, in a hearing conducted in Wellington yesterday.
The charges upheld were misconduct in a professional capacity and breaches of the Institute’s Rules and Code of Ethics.
The charges relate to a complaint made to the Institute about a failed investment scheme, involving the purchase of
software rights for $7.5M, dating back to 1997.
The Tribunal ordered that Leon Paul Hendren of Christchurch be removed from the Register of Chartered Accountants and
ordered to pay costs of $17,196.85.
The other member facing charges was censured and ordered to pay costs of $17,196.85.
The Institute’s Director of Professional Conduct, Lorinda Kelly, said that she was pleased with the result.
“The Institute has a duty to act in the public interest. The public has a right to expect the highest professional
standards from our members. Behaving with integrity is one of the fundamental principles underpinning our Code of
Ethics, which also states that members must only undertake work in areas where they have professional competence. By its
actions today, the Tribunal has upheld those principles.”
