Cold Snap Sees South Islanders Switch To Goose Down
The wild winter weather has seen a growing number of South Islanders swap their man made fibre bedding in favour of the
guaranteed warmth and comfort of natural products, according to HouseHold Linens.
Christchurch store manager Linda Dixon reports strong sales of merino blankets, goose down inners and the iconic
HouseHold Linens goose down shake. She explained: `It’s been very nippy and people have been stocking up on the warmer
products. We’ve had several customers who’ve come in and bought new duvets for all their beds because they just can’t
keep the cold at bay with artificial hollow fibre and are opting for the warmth of goose down.’
The goose down shake is amongst today’s celebrity must-haves and features at top international hotels and luxury lodges.
HouseHold Linens’ founder Avis Nelson said: `The design is based on my Grandma’s goose down shake and it took 18 months
to perfect our updated version and while not naming names, it would be fair to say, we’ve had some famous faces go home
with it.’
Grandma’s shakes are back in vogue for the same reasons they were popular in the first place: filled with 100 per cent
goose down they’re lightweight and promote comfortable sleep.
Avis adds: `The shake fits over the mattress and transforms it. Some people say it’s like sleeping on a cloud. Using a
shake can also help reduce energy bills. It provides warmth during the winter months by trapping body heat; and because
air is able to circulate through its loft, a shake will also keep you cool in summer.’

Cotton care tips for best results
Cold machine wash and line dry. Add lavender water to the final rinse rather than using fabric softener. Use half the
recommended amount of washing powder. And if you use the drier, choose a cool cycle and dry to 80%.
