Winter Sun Visits Fieldays 2006
Visitors to the first day of Fieldays 2006 were treated to a sunny day out today at the Southern Hemisphere’s largest
agricultural showcase. On this successful opening day, 24,339 people visited Fieldays, above average when compared to
opening days over recent years. Fieldays General Manager Barry Quayle was positive about 2006 visitor flow.
“Looking out over the site during the day I have seen that we’re on track to equal or exceed 2005 visitor numbers. With
the busiest days still to come, Fieldays 2006 will be more popular than ever.”
Opening Ceremony speakers Dr. Alan Bollard (Governor, NZ Reserve Bank) and Andrew Ferrier (Chief Executive, Fonterra)
expressed optimism for the future of the agricultural sector, and the importance of local companies continuing to bring
returns back to New Zealand.
Wednesday was action-packed with a seminars and demonstrations throughout the day, the roar of the supermodified
tractors, fencing and logging skills competitions and the glamour of the Ag Art Wear and Possum Fur Fashion Design Award
Shows.
The eight finalists for the Fieldays Rural Bachelor of the Year competition were taken off the farm and thrown in the
public eye for the first time today after a warm welcome at the ‘secret bachelor pad’ last night where they got to know
each other and the judges over dinner and a few beers.
The first heat of the day was the Stihl ‘Chainsaw Champs’ which was won by Craig Pullar of Northland. The bachelors
enjoyed the fine weather at Fieldays as they completed an axe throw, crosscut saw race and chainsaw race.
The crowds were entertained after lunch with the bachelors showing off their musical talents with old tractor parts,
chains, tins and pipe off the farm. Otago representative Warren Nichol impressed the judges with his tones and rhythm.
Later in the afternoon, 37 year old Matiu Noakes from Motueka displayed his years of experience in charming the ladies
in a round of speed dating, winning the ‘Meet the Bachelors’ heat. And Christen Dimond from Waikato/ King Country took
out the ‘Fastest Fencer’ title – beating his competitors in both timing and quality.
The action continues at Fieldays which runs through until 5pm, Saturday 17 June.
