Winemaker launches his life’s work in new range of wines
Exuberant New Zealand winemaker Dr John Forrest has launched a range of wines that he says are the culmination of his wine-making career to date. Named ‘The John Forrest Collection’, the range comprises six wines sourced from wine-growing regions and vineyards that Dr Forrest believes are the best for each chosen grape variety.
The initial release comprises a Marlborough Wairau Valley Riesling, Brancott Valley Noble Riesling, Otago Waitaki Valley Pinot Noir, Hawke’s Bay Gimblett Gravels Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon and a wine simply called ‘The White’.
“‘The White’ is my expression of the best white wine that New Zealand can produce,” explains Dr Forrest. “It all started when a highly-respected English wine writer suggested that New Zealand was missing an iconic white wine that brought together the best of the country’s white wine abilities.”
Destined to be one of New Zealand’s most prestigious wines at about $50 a bottle ‘The White’ is a studious and unique blend of the best white grape varieties from their proven growing sites in any given year. With vintage conditions and fruit quality determining the wine’s content, the blend is flexible, and as with the other wines in the range, will only be produced in years when quality allows.
“My goal is to create not only a wine that combines aroma, texture, flavour and balance but also one that continues to evolve whether in the glass or the bottle,” says Dr Forrest.
Produced in very limited quantities the John Forrest Collection is available only direct from the winery or via selected New Zealand restaurants with a small quantity released in export markets. Dr Forrest hopes the wines will have some retail exposure in New Zealand following the second release next year.
Master of Wine and one of New Zealand’s leading wine commentators, Bob Campbell welcomes the innovative new white wine.
“Given his scientist’s love of experimenting together with his reputation for quality wine, I am not surprised John has broken new ground in his creation of ‘The White’. This is an exciting development for both John and the New Zealand wine industry.”
