Transpower: Auckland Power Outage Update
At 8:32 am this morning a major power outage occurred affecting the Auckland central business district and southern Auckland suburbs.
The fault was caused by an equipment failure at Otahuhu substation which resulted in all power from the affected part of the substation being interrupted. In addition all power from the Otahuhu B and Southdown generation stations was interrupted.
The fault occurred in the overhead earth wires, which dropped into the 110 kV switching equipment, causing the failure.
There were high wind gusts in the affected area at the time of the outage and this may have been a contributor.
It is expected that power will be restored to the Auckland Central business district and affected suburbs by mid-afternoon.
Transpower will provide a further update at 2 pm.
