Business worth an estimated $2 billion to New Zealand’s economy will be generated by the country’s largest annual tourism event, TRENZ (Tourism Industry Rendezvous New Zealand), in Christchurch next week (12-15 June).
More than 400 New Zealand tourism businesses will gather at the Westpac Centre for three days of intensive business activity.
They will meet with a similar number of international travel and tourism buyers arriving from 33 countries to purchase accommodation, transport, attractions and activities at wholesale rates, and include them in holiday brochures and itineraries for forthcoming seasons.
More than 1500 people, including over 60 international and New Zealand media, are expected to attend the event and associated networking functions.
TRENZ 2006 in numbers:
- 8500 square metres of undercover exhibition space is needed, including 4000 square metres of marquee space

“Tourism is New Zealand’s largest single foreign exchange earning industry, with international visitors now contributing $7.4 billion a year to the economy,” Tourism Industry Association New Zealand (TIA) Chief Executive Fiona Luhrs says.
“TRENZ is a vital event for tourism businesses catering for international visitors and we go all out to impress the international buyers and create an atmosphere that convinces them New Zealand is the right destination for their clients.”
Tourism is the fastest growing industry in the world and TRENZ 2006 will help ensure New Zealand attracts its share of the global holiday market, Ms Luhrs says.
TRENZ is managed by TIA in partnership with Tourism New Zealand and supported by Air New Zealand, Qantas and Christchurch & Canterbury Marketing.
