Organisations turn to consolidation with single-source supply solutions
Companies and large government organisations are increasingly choosing to consolidate their purchasing requirements
using single source solutions such as Corporate Express.
New Zealand Police have found such a move very beneficial for streamlining purchasing requirements and trimming costs
from expenditure.
Stan Pope, National Procurement Manager for New Zealand Police said their partnership with Corporate Express is
predicated on an end-to-end electronic solution.
“We have over 10,000 staff in locations around the country and maintain an internal electronic catalogue of approx 2,100
items ranging from stationery through to office furniture totalling over 5 million dollars expenditure each year,” Pope
said.
“Our contract has brought about a large amount of consolidation which has helped us to aggregate volumes and save costs
whilst still meeting operational needs. Corporate Express has been proactive in assessing our consumption and
introducing better options.
“Corporate Express reviews the volumes coming through and recommends ways to still meet our needs with alternatives that
reduce our costs. We’ve instituted some substitutions on recommendation from Corporate Express to use the generic type
brands that come at a lower cost.
“The electronic system catalogues and workflow approvals utilized between New Zealand Police and Corporate Express
materially streamlines the administration and reduces paperwork. Because of the tightness and robustness of the
electronic process, the fast turnaround from order to supply reduces the need of onsite stocking.
“They have also done some significant work in helping us to reduce our environmental impact. They review the products we
have selected and give advice as to how we might use more environmentally friendly products that reduce our impact and
yet do not significantly affect our bottom line. For example, they provide recycled printer cartridges providing
significant cost reduction as well as being environmentally responsible.
“We also have eleven other government agencies that are currently sourcing under our Syndicated Procurement contract and
leveraging the associated arrangement we’ve made whilst also saving each agency the repetitive time, cost and effort
otherwise associated with full tendering.
“Corporate Express continues to remain proactive and build on the relationship and stay focused on opportunities for
continuous improvement. Our contract was won by open tender and has been in place for six years. During that period
Corporate Express successfully retained the business following an open market retender process at the expiry of the
original term,” he said.
